Elkhorn Slough is a very beautiful place on the California coast about half an hour south of Santa Cruz.  All that wetland was once a factory-type dairy farm, which destroyed the land and dirtied the water.  In 1971, The Nature Conservancy bought a parcel of it and began to clean it up and restore it, then other conservationist groups bought more of it, and now it's a 5000-acre habitat for 700 species of animals and birds, and is a National Estuarine Research Reserve.
